KWV is headquartered in the city of Paarl in the wine district of Western Cape. It all began at the address 57 on Main in 1918, the same year Nelson Mandela was born. The purpose of establishing the cooperative was to handle the deep crisis that the wine industry was in at the time. Together, the vineyard owners within the cooperative were able to stabilize, support, and create structure in a relatively young wine industry.
Today, KWV is one of the world’s largest wine and spirits producers, and is investing more than ever in caring for the local environment by investing in various social projects.
KWV produces everything from house wines to classic Roodeberg, finer wines such as Laborie and the prestige series The Mentor´s.
WINES CERTIFIED BY FAIRTRADE & WIETA
KWV purchases its grapes from contracted growers throughout the Western Cape. The different grapes used to produce the wines 57 on Main and Café Culture come from the Rooidraai vineyard, which is certified by Fairtrade.
The goal of Fairtrade is to provide employees with better economic conditions, prevent discrimination and counteract child labor. The certification also sets requirements for sustainable production where the environment is in focus, for example when it comes to chemical pesticides.
