Tabasco
The world’s most famous chili sauce!
In 1868 on Avery Island, Louisiana, the starting shot was fired for the world’s most famous hot sauce. The gardener and food enthusiast Edmund McIlhenny received some hot chili seeds from a traveler from Central America. The seeds were planted on Avery Island and in 1869 the first bottle was produced. McIlhenny patented his technique for making his fiery red sauce and to this day the production looks the same. The chili is picked by hand, pressed into a mass that is stored in oak barrels for 3 years, which gives it its unique and complex flavor.
TABASCO© is still a family business and today the recipe has been passed down to the fifth generation of McIlhenny. TABASCO© Original still consists of only 3 natural ingredients: chili peppers, salt and vinegar. The sauce is naturally gluten-free and has lower salt content than many other hot sauces. TABASCO© is today distributed to nearly 200 countries around the world and most people know the brand, but fewer know what it can do for cooking. For many, TABASCO© is “just a very strong sauce”, but it not only adds heat to food but also functions as a fantastic flavor enhancer, not least because it naturally contains umami. What TABASCO© does is bring out the best in food and elevate other flavors to new heights. In addition to TABASCO© Original, there are several chili sauces in the assortment, such as Habanero, Jalapeno, Chipotle, Buffalo and Sweet & Spicy.
