Tomorrow’s coffee with today’s research
World Coffee Research (WCR) was founded in 2012 and is a global research collaboration working to develop coffee varieties that are more resilient to climate change. The initiative aims to protect the future of coffee farmers and ensure sustainable coffee production for the next generation by investing in innovation and scientific research on climate change, plant breeding, and agriculture.
Historically, coffee cultivation has received significantly less research support to increase crop diversity compared to many other crops. Currently, there are only 111 known varieties of coffee plants, while strawberries, for example, have as many as 6,640 varieties. This underscores the need to support research and innovation to develop and strengthen the variations in the coffee plant and thus protect coffee for the future. Today, WCR brings together over 190 companies from 30 countries. Arvid Nordquist is Sweden’s first member.
Our involvement in World Coffee Research is an important part of our sustainability work, and together we are taking responsibility for tomorrow’s coffee for future generations.

“Research is crucial to tackling climate change, but it is difficult to implement in an industry dominated by small-scale farmers. By supporting WCR, we are making the latest research on resilient coffee varieties available to everyone. This is crucial for coffee farmers and the future of coffee.”
