KWV Wine and spirits producer with extensive sustainability work

KWV was founded in 1918 and is based in the town of Paarl in the Western Cape wine district. Today, they are one of the world’s largest wine and spirits producers. The issue of sustainability has long been a central part of their work, and KWV’s sustainability work is divided into three focus areas.

Social responsibility

KWV is investing more than ever in various social projects to strengthen local communities by improving living conditions for vulnerable people with a focus on children and mothers at different stages of life. KWV is donating to organisations such as the Khula Development Group, Pebbles Project, Athlone House of Strength, Paarl Youth Initiative and Elevation Programme.

They also support Rise Up’s operations, which help people develop and realise business ideas with the potential to lead to self-sufficiency.

Fair working conditions

KWV ensures that the contracted growers comply with the Amfori BSCI Code of Conduct by requiring them to be WIETA certified (Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trade Association). WIETA is a recognised organisation that works in the South African wine industry to promote fair working conditions.

KWV also works closely with Fairtrade and the Wine of South Africa (Wosa) organisation to ensure sustainable working practices and address any violations.

Sustainable farming practices

All the contracted growers and the production facility are certified in accordance with the internationally recognised Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) standard, which ensures environmental sustainability.

KWV is an active member of the Confronting Climate Change (CCC) initiative. It is a carbon footprint calculation project developed to support the South African fruit and wine sectors.
