Our coffee beans

We have long worked to take responsibility throughout the entire value chain. Since 2014, we have therefore only sourced 100% certified coffee beans in accordance with the Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade standards. Our organic range is also certified by the EU ecolabel, the EU leaf and KRAV. When you choose certified coffee, you can rest assured that it has been produced with consideration for both people and the environment, and that it has been audited by an independent third party. The certifications include protection of human rights, fair income for farmers, efforts to combat eutrophication, preservation of biodiversity, protection of water resources and healthy soils. In addition, the certifications also work to combat the use of child labour and discrimination.

Together, these requirements form a clear quality seal that shows that we take responsibility for both the environment and the people behind the coffee.

Water efficiency and regenerative agriculture
Certified coffee farms are required to use water efficiently, purify the water so that it can be reused and reduce energy consumption. In addition, we support the transition to regenerative farming practices, such as increased use of organic fertilisers, co-farming systems, buffer zones and forestry. This leads to a reduced need for chemicals and better carbon storage in the soil.

Fair conditions for coffee farmers

Coffee is produced in countries that often struggle with widespread poverty and many farmers live below the poverty line. Women often have less access to land, money and education. This means a great responsibility for us as raw coffee buyers.

We take responsibility throughout the supply chain and work to improve working conditions in the coffee growing countries. The certifications we use include clear requirements on the prohibition of child labour, the right to trade unions, safe working conditions and the promotion of women’s rights. In addition to the certifications, we are actively working to increase transparency and traceability in the supplier chain.

We prioritise long-term relationships with both coffee cooperatives and coffee farmers. Stable partnerships create financial security, enable farmers to invest in sustainable farming practices and improve working conditions for employees.

Financial security for coffee farmers
High quality coffee is sought after. Coffee is a listed commodity and is traded on the same markets as oil, gold and copper. Next to oil, coffee is the largest commodity on the commodity exchange. Most coffee is traded in relation to the world market price, i.e. the price on the commodity exchange. The world market price, in turn, is determined by expectations of the harvest and how the stock market generally performs. This creates economic uncertainty for farmers, who sometimes get less paid than it costs to grow the coffee.

The Rainforest Alliance supports its farmers by showing what extra premiums they can receive for coffee grown according to the organisation’s standards. The buyer, who must also be a member of the Rainforest Alliance, agrees that Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee must be paid at a higher price than both the world market price and the price for equivalent quality.

Fairtrade has a fixed minimum price, a guaranteed lowest price that coffee farmers get paid for their coffee, no matter how low the world market price is. This protects the farmer from sharp price falls and ensures that the income covers the cost of sustainable production. If the market price is higher than the minimum price, the farmer receives the higher price. The Fairtrade premium is an extra payment in addition to the sales price. It goes to a joint fund that the farmers themselves decide on, often through their cooperative. The premium is used to improve crops, invest in the local community, education, environmental efforts or climate adaptation of production. In 2024, we paid over SEK 40 million in Fairtrade premiums.

Our certifications

Prohibition of deforestation: promotes reforestation and cultivation systems where coffee is grown together with trees that provide shade. Requirements for collective bargaining agreements, protection of migrant workers, gender equality programmes and education. Requirements for measures that contribute to fair and equitable remuneration levels.

Ban on harmful pesticides, genetic modification of crops and a ban on contributing to deforestation. Requirements for protection zones, conservation and promotion of biodiversity, safe handling of hazardous waste and responsible use of water resources. Set minimum price and extra premium that is reinvested in the local community. Requirements for democratically governed cooperatives, prohibition of child and forced labour, and equality work.

The EU leaf is the EU organic farming label and shows that the product is in full compliance with the conditions and regulations established by the EU for organic farming. The certification prohibits chemical pesticides and benefits soil health and ecosystems.

KRAV-certified organic coffee means a ban on chemical pesticides, which benefits soil health and ecosystems. KRAV-certified coffee must not be grown on land where natural ecosystems with a high protection value have been converted into agricultural land. Better working conditions and social responsibility with a focus on human rights and the prohibition of child labour.
